What is coaching not?

Coaching is not therapy or counselling, which explore a client’s past. Coaching may look to your past to see what might be holding you back, but coaching focuses on the future and moving forward. Although some of the skills a Coach uses are similar, such as listening and asking incisive questions, coaching is more action oriented and concentrates on designing a strategy to move forward.

Therapy or counselling may look at a psychological or mental condition, whereas coaching looks at you as a whole and at all areas of your life. A therapist will see their client as someone with problems and issues, but a coach will see their clients as healthy, strong and capable. Coaching generates independence and autonomy by encouraging a client to work through problems themselves and find their own solutions.
